dentures are one of the best solutions for lost teeth. The problem usually is the cost of the good denture. It will be hard to find a dentist who can offer quality affordable denture. The cost vary from country to country but i will try to give some tips that can help in lowering the cost of the denture.

First thing try to contact a close dental school and ask about the prices of the dentures. Generally the quality of the work in dental schools are acceptable although many patients are afraid from the idea that a student will finish the denture. This idea is not accurate most of the time. In most of the countries dental student is not allowed to work on patients the the dentists in the clinics of dental schools are usually fresh graduates in the training period or post graduate students. with the close supervision from the seniors the end results are usually equal or even better than many private clinics and much more affordable.

Teeth implants.

Teeth implants are the best replacements for dentures . It still a very expensive solution but for the patient who can afford this solution it will be the best. The concept is simple the jaw bone is drilled under local anesthesia and a titanium post in inserted in the drilled host.

Usually the dentist will allow 3-5 months for the bone to heal around the post then a porcelain crown is attached to the inserted post. Some times we insert the crown just after the insertion of the post , a technique which called immediate loading. The technique is great specially when the lost tooth is in the anterior segment and the patient don’t want to look bad for 3-5 months, but the case should be selected very careful as this technique is not suitable for patients with impaired healing or huge chewing force.

Some times the teeth implants are contraindicated like in the cases of severe osteoporosis, uncontrolled diabetes or very bad oral hygiene. In fact the list of contraindications is becoming shorter and shorter as a result of the excessive researches and developments.

Also the teeth implants can be used to support dentures in cases of completely edentulus patient. In these cases 2-6 implants in inserted in each jaw and the denture in attached to the posts through ball and socket or bar and clips systems. The denture can be removed cleaned and reinserted again. Dentures in this cases will be more stable and effective.

last thing is the cost of teeth implants that range between 1000 $ and 2000$ for each unit wich vary from country to country and doctor to doctor.

Sea Bond denture adhesive.

Sea bond is a good type of denture adhesives that makes wearing denture more comfortable. It holds very good in your mouth so you feel that you eat with your natural teeth as it holds in place all the day so it gives you more confidence.

It is a wafer type applied in two size “15 and 30 wafers in pack ”

As being wafer type is a good option to some patients who don’t like paste type because the excess paste ooze in their mouth and you may swallow it.

Sea bond wafers has one standard size that can be trimmed to fit each case. Also it is very easy to be applied.

Application instructions:

1- Place dry sea bond wafers on denture. If too large trim lapping wafers with scissors

If upper wafer bunches up in back, cut a v shape in the back like the pre-cut v in front.

2- Clean denture thoroughly. Moisten wafer with warm water

3- Position moistened wafer with white side up, smooth wrinkles with finger

4- Place denture into mouth, hold firmly until secure if wafers doesn’t hold, moisten wafer more thoroughly.

5- To remove wafer from denture. lift corner and peel away .

This product has no expiration date so you can have it for long period but its very important to keep it in a day place away from wetness and moisture .

Sea bond is a free zinc product that make it not danger if swallowed , its made of non-toxic ingredients . It contains sodium , the pre-trimmed upper wafer contain 7 mg of sodium and the pre-trimmed lower wafer contains 3-9 mg.

Sea bond is presented in two forms (regular & fresh )

Its regular type has no flavor & the fresh type has long lasting fresh mint flavor .

Finally there are some safety tips that your should keep it on mind:

1-if irritation occurs, discontinue use.

2-porrly fitting denture may impair health and interfere with the adhesive action of sea bond

3-consult dentist regularly

4- If you have difficulty of swallowing or choking you should not use this product.

5- Keep out of reach of children .

Secure Denture Adhesive cream

Mode of action of Secure Denture Adhesive cream in completely different from the other conventional fixatives. It is non-water soluble so it is not affected by saliva or any liquids which make it prevent any slipping or sliding to the denture as it acts as a strong bond between the gum and the denture.

Being a bond cream that is insoluble in water gives it many advantages as there is no chance that be swallowed in your stomach and also it can’t alter the taste of your food like the other adhesives that can ooze from the denture flanges during usage.

Application of secure denture adhesive is so sample by following these steps :

Clean and dry your denture thoroughly.
Apply secure to your dentures by squeezing the tube slightly and put separate dots to your denture
Insert dentures in place and bite gently.
To get the best result wait 15 minutes befor eating or drinking

There are also some hints to help you

1- start using small mount of cream and increases it gradually till you get the correct amount you need to have the max lasting bond.

2- If at the end of the day the bonding effect as not lessened, leave the denture into mouth overnight and apply less adhesive next day

3- Soft liners may reduce effect of bond

4- Store at room temperature.

5-To remove residues from gum , simply use soft brush & warm water

6-It might appears mild tingling or burning sensation that will disappear later in sensitive gum

Also we have to say that One of the most important advantages of secure adhesive that its ingredients are used in some kinds of Indian food Ingredients like:

Miglyol →derivied from glycerin Polyvinyl acetate → (non water soluble ingredient used as the base in many chaving gyms

Sodium carboxynethyl cellulose → derived from tree bark it

Hello doc many patients asking about prosthetic adhesives so i will ask you some common questions that we receive regularly from our readers.

You are welcome Mr Ahmed you know that i always like to speak about dentistry.

The most common question that almost every denture wearer ask, do all the complete dentures need the aid of the adhesive?

First of all we should know that generally dentures don’t need adhesives. The vast majority of complete dentures are usually retentive and functional without any help.

So what are the cases that need the dentures adhesive aid?

1- Bad toothless ridge: Edentulous or toothless ridge is the elevated ridge that remains after teeth extraction. This ridge is extremely important in denture retention as it is the main structure that supports and retain the denture in place.

In some cases this ridge is very flat, thin or irregular which can make the denture not to be retentive enough to be used with trust.

2-Deficient or very thick saliva: Some patients suffer from diminished salivary secretion due to systemic diseases like diabetes or the consumption of some drugs that can cause xerostomia or what we call dry mouth. Saliva surface tension acts as a normal adhesive so any defect in the volume or the consistency of saliva will affect denture stability.

3-New denture wearers: Some patients may need extra trust in their first days with dentures. Also the muscles will need a week or two to be trained to stabilize the denture. so it will be useful to use it in the first days till we solve this trust problem.

There are many forms available in the markets, How can we choose between them?

We have to say that you should ask your dentist about the forms that can be good for your case then give them a try untill you find out what can give you the best results. But i will give my personal opinion about some of these forms.

1-Powder type: very easy to apply, easy to clean don’t interfere with denture occlusion but not retentive enough when firm fixation is needed.

2-Glow or paste type: Best retention but a little hard to be cleaned and also interfere with denture occlusion which can be annoying to some patients.

Last thing doctor what is the contra indications for using denture adhesive?

1- sensitivity to any of the components of the material.

2- Bad, ill fitted or rocking denture: In this cases using the adhesive will lead to more bone shrinkage which will make the fixation of the bad denture impossible.

3-Denture that was good for (1-5 years) then the denture becomes loose, rocking and fall during eating or drinking. As the human bone usually shrink in response to mastication force so the denture needs to be relined at your dentist’s clinic and the prolonged use of the glow at this cases will make the relining impossible.

cushion grip denture adhesive is a specific type of denture adhesives that can last up to 4 days if used properly. Some patients consider it as a temporary replacement to dentist relining of loose denture. As a dentist i don’t agree to this but it still a good solution till you repair your dentist at the dentist’s clinic.

All you need to do is to brush your denture carefully with a tooth brush or denture brush then dry it. Apply the material as pea size drops to the denture fitting surface, Then put it in your mouth and apply a gradual light pressure till the denture secured in place.

Repeat the steps for the lower denture and insert it to your mouth then bite firmly and wait for 15 min before you start to use your denture for eating.

last thing remember it is not for bad, loose or ill fitted dentures as usually the process of relining of these patients are hard even for a dentist lol.
